Art Basel Qatar Returns with 82 Galleries and Expanded Subsidies
The fair will cover half of outbound shipping for unsold works, as the conflict with Iran continues to disrupt the Gulf

Art Basel Qatar will return to Msheireb Downtown Doha in January with 82 galleries, down from 87 at its inaugural edition, and increased subsidies intended to reduce the cost and risk of exhibiting.
The fair opens to VIPs on 26 January with 80 solo presentations, nearly 40 percent of them from first-time exhibitors, among them Pilar Corrias and Hanart TZ. Gagosian, David Zwirner, White Cube and Lisson Gallery are set to return, while Pace, Gladstone, Almine Rech and Hauser & Wirth will not.
The fair will again cover customs clearance, transport, storage, installation and accommodation through partnerships with Qatar Sports Investments, QC+ and Visit Qatar. It will now also cover half the cost of outbound shipping for unsold works, up to $20,000 per gallery, citing higher costs and travel concerns.
Those concerns are not abstract. The first edition closed on 7 February 2026, three weeks before the US and Israel began bombing Iran on 28 February. Iran and its allies have since attacked infrastructure across the Gulf, including in Qatar, where strikes on the Ras Laffan complex contributed to the loss of 17 percent of the country’s liquified natural gas capacity. The conflict has also effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz, severely restricting Qatar’s ability to export the fuel.
More recently, the Iran-aligned Houthis have repeatedly attacked Saudi Arabia’s King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, where a strike on 10 October killed 13 people. Some 86 percent of scheduled flights at the airport were cancelled between 8 and 25 October
The instability has complicated Art Basel’s expansion into Doha. For an international fair dependent on collectors, galleries and valuable artworks moving easily in and out of the Gulf, the regional escalation makes security, travel, shipping and insurance increasingly difficult to separate from its commercial ambitions.
The announcement follows Art Basel’s decision to close its Paris fair two days early on 23 October amid protests, and precedes Frieze’s first Abu Dhabi edition, which opens at Manarat Al Saadiyat on 19 November with 84 galleries.
