Thai art gallery Tang Contemporary has closed one of its two Hong Kong spaces following a year marked by operational challenges. First reported by The Art Newspaper, the news was confirmed after a notice appeared on the door disclosing HK$1.57 million (approx £151,000) debt in unpaid rent accrued over the last year with interest and management fees.
Furthermore, several artists have now come forward claiming the gallery is still withholding consigned works and failing to disburse sales proceeds from the past year. These include the New York-based artist Li Nianxin, who exhibited in the gallery late last year, and Lin Fanglu, who won the 2021 Loewe Foundation Craft Prize.
The Art Newspaper cites the absence of a standardised structure for processing artist payments and the maintaining of the expensive H Queen’s location in Hong Kong’s Central District after the end of the lease as possible factors leading to the closure.
Established in 1997 in Bangkok, Tang Contemporary has grown to count outposts across Asia, including Beijing, Seoul and most recently in Singapore. These spaces continue to be operational and, according to gallery director Vivian Har, the staff from Wong Chuk Hang is set to relocate to the location inside the H Queen’s building.
