South African visual artist Unathi Mkonto is the newest recipient of the Nicoletta Fiorucci Foundation Prize. Inaugurated last year, the prize rewards exceptional works by artists working with non-traditional media and unconventional forms of presentation.
Nominated by Yinka Shonibare and represented by Goodman Gallery, Mkonto was awarded £10,000, shared between the artist and the Yinka Shonibare Foundation, alongside a commission for the Nicoletta Fiorucci Foundation in London.
His solo presentation is currently on display in Frieze’s Artist-to-Artist section. Using beechwood to create softly bended lines and hanging friezes, Mkonto’s sculptures reflect on what he describes as 'architecture of imagination'.
