The Bangkok Art Biennale has announced the 72 artists and collectives taking part in its fifth edition, Angels & Mara, which opens on 29 October and runs to 28 February 2027. The title pairs Bangkok’s epithet, the City of Angels, with Mara, the Buddhist personification of temptation.
The biennale is again staged across the city rather than at a single site; this time at 11 venues, among them three working Buddhist temples, the National Museum Bangkok, Museum Siam and three shopping and office complexes. New to the list is Alliance Française Bangkok, the French cultural centre and language school founded in the city in 1912.
At Wat Pho, the Japanese-Swiss sculptor Leiko Ikemura will show Memento Mori, a reclining bronze whose pose echoes the temple’s monumental Reclining Buddha. Liu Jianhua, who trained in Jingdezhen, China’s ceramics capital, is making a site-specific work in steel and glazed porcelain for the National Museum’s Throne Hall.
Two collaboration programmes, BAB Plus and BAB Fringe, add shows at eight partner spaces, each timed to run alongside the biennale. They range from Bangkok institutions, such as the Jim Thompson Art Center, to Rongsi 1984+1 Gallery, a converted rice mill in Suphan Buri about 100km northwest of the city. ThaiBev, Thailand’s largest drinks company, which makes Chang beer and Sangsom rum, set up the biennale’s parent foundation in 2018 and remains its founding sponsor.
