From March next year, Venice will become the permanent home of part of the Pinault Collection.
The city will host 106 contemporary artworks by 54 artists, whose names have yet to be revealed. The works will be unveiled at Palazzo Grassi, which overlooks the Grand Canal.
The 18th-century palazzo, restored by the Japanese architect Tadao Ando, has hosted 27 temporary exhibitions. It is one of the collection’s three venues, alongside Punta della Dogana, also in Venice, and the Bourse de Commerce in Paris.
In a recent interview with Le Monde, the French billionaire described the announcement as the culmination of a process 20 years in the making. ‘Venice was a natural choice,’ he said. ‘It’s where I first decided to share my collection with the public, and it’s a city where the present is constantly confronted with questions of longevity.’
