Cooper Gallery Dundee Threatened by University Cost Cutting

The Cooper Gallery in Dundee has been threatened with closure due to cost cutting across Dundee University, reports the institution’s student newspaper, The Jute Journal. The gallery was opened in 1953 and has hosted various exhibitions, including those of numerous Turner Prize nominees such as Rosalind Nashashibi and Lucy Skaer (2022), Phil Collins (2019) and Paul Noble (2011, 2018).
The proposal details a potential closure to occur by 2027, alongside the axing of various academic and academic-related posts at the Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design. It comes amid multiple shutdowns across Scotland’s arts scene, including that of CCA Glasgow in 2026 and the threat of a 300 per cent rent increase to Trongate 103 building, a longstanding not-for-profit arts hub also in Glasgow.
A petition has been launched in opposition to the Cooper Gallery’s closure, which has been signed by almost 500 people.
