SMAC Gallery in Cape Town has been accused of delayed payments and withholding artworks, Hyperallergic has reported.

The claims were initially made via Instagram, on a now-deleted post by the artist Kate Gottgens, who worked with the gallery until late last year. The post attracted comments by other artists who claimed to have had similar experiences with the gallery.

Gottgens told Hyperallergic that the gallery has now accounted for “most of the work” and “all of the money” it was due to return, but this occurred after significant – sometimes years-long – delays.

SMAC Gallery has refuted the accusations.
